Focuses on serving as a strategic business partner with corporate and business unit executives; directs the development of tax strategy to ensure tax affairs are in compliance with national, local, and/or US tax laws; oversees the preparation and filing of tax returns; conducts tax research programs to ascertain the optimal tax minimization strategy for the organization

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
・ Aligns tax goals and strategy with those of corporate executives
・ Proactively delivers high value tax advice clearly integrated with business issues and requirements
・ Reviews all material tax issues or results
・ Formulates and drives Tax department vision, mission and operating strategy
・ Participates in development of corporate strategy and executive level decision making to identify and manage tax risks and opportunities
・ Communicates the tax implications of business strategies in an understandable and persuasive manner for consideration by corporate and business unit executive management in both ad hoc (very preliminary - little data available) and formal (well into process with some data available) discussions
・ Builds and effectively utilizes a network of professional and industry associations, and peers and subject matter experts to stay current on all tax issues affecting the firm's operations
・ Selects and develops tax managers who are capable of managing the day-to-day operations of the Tax department and of ensuring the accuracy and quality of tax accounting, audit, compliance, and planning activities
・ Provides oversight for formulation and implementation of corporate policies on all forms of taxation (corporate and individual income taxes, consumption tax, property tax, etc.)
・ Provides oversight for tax research and planning of acquisitions, dispositions, business combinations, and other tax planning strategies
・ Provides oversight of reserves, provisions, accruals, and financial statement presentation
・ Provides oversight and final approval of tax returns with material risks or payments
・ Provides oversight of selection and performance review of outside vendors and contractors to assure successful results
・ Provides oversight of tax materiality and risk tolerance levels
・ Provides oversight of audit issues that are to be taken to the appeals level or litigated
・ Directs workload of tax managers
・ Performs other related duties as required

Education & Experience:
・ Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field and 15-20 years of tax experience in the insurance or financial services industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience
・ Ten years in a supervisory/managerial role
・ Licensed Tax Accountant or Certified Public Account (either in U.S. or Japan) (required)
・ Strong communication skills in both Japanese (fluent) and English (Business-level)
・ Experience working in a Big 4 accounting firms as a manager or above position
・ Experience working in global corporation is a plus
・ Work experience in the life insurance industry is a plus

Job Knowledge & Skills:
・ Advanced proficiency in Corporate Taxation including Japan national and local tax, desirably US tax, planning and compliance requirements of financial statutes
・ Ability to clearly communicate technical tax issues to executive management
・ Strong knowledge of taxation of investments and insurance operations
・ Excellent presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
・ Strong leadership skills and demonstrable organization-building and talent development skills
・ Solid project management, organizational, and execution skills
